GHIN THE SOUND WIZARD

PhotobucketToday we had a talk with Ghin, who is an awesome guy, he spoke to us about all sorts of things to do with sound, here are some points that I took from the talk today...

Sound-waves are very interesting things, they can penetrate things, bounce off things, get refracted, there was some talk about sound being better than light, but that is a debate for another time.

The universe is constantly making sounds, but as we hear them all the time we block them out, and we dont really hear the sound anymore, this is the sound of the universe, this was also linked to a thing Ghin was talking about called RAGA, which is an indian notion, that produced sound that didn't need to be listened to, it is merely there to change the emotion of a space and interact with it. Which I guess is very appropriate to our brief.

There are a few different types of sound, these are things like drones, intervals, resonance which is vibration and how we use them in life and experiments. There are somethings called infra-sound which we cant hear, which is pretty interesting too.

I also learnt that sound in the cold travels further, which means is louder and sound in the warmth travels less which means it is quieter.

We were talking about ambient music and that it is something that can be behind something else and is not distracting or takes something away from the situation, if anything it just adds to the atmosphere in a positive way.

We also talked about how some places nowadays were specifically designed to have sound within them, like concert halls but the sound still dosent resonate well or sound as good as something that was built in a period of limited technology, a very common place for this is a church, as it is sort of a living instrument. Which was an interesting point.

There was alot of other things talked about which im sure ill write about at some point, but it was helpful and really interesting.
