I have only just found out about this painter Franz Kline, he was an abstract expressionist, who was based in New York, he was labeled an 'action painter' due to his spontaneous and intense style, however apparently he would practise his works before doing them, but i feel practise is a massive part to play within the... improvised styles of anyone, due to the fact that you have to be amazing at a skill before you can go and create an amazing piece of improvisation, however this is another conversation for another time. I think that Klines work is fantastic, i love how his work is almost architectural however is flat on a canvas, i also love how brash it looks, you can see his spontaneous impulses left as black marks on the canvas.
