UVA - CHORUS

One of my favourite art and design practises at the moment, United Visual Artists are an exciting and innovative company that produce work at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, live performance, moving image and digital installation. I have seen many of their works around London in the last three years, each one... technically amazing and visually stunning. One of their works that I saw last year at the Wapping Project was 'Chorus'. It was originally commissioned to celebrate the re-opening if the Howard Assembly Room. It consists of an array of motor-assisted pendulum's that swing from the roof, which have both sound a light being emitted from them. As the dynamic system evolves, the rhythms revolve through chaos and return to unison, producing a hypnotic and seductive performance that heightens the viewer’s awareness of the space and their relationship with it. It is created by humans however it creates a system on its own, and is therefore a new kind of instrument, the human input is just the catalyst for what it is doing.

When I saw it at the Wapping Project it really was mesmerising, the video here does not do it justice, its just one of these things that has to be seen in real life. The idea however of rhythms revolving through chaos and then returning to unison is one I really like, and feel it could be used within the ASFS work.
