The late Jean Michel Basquiat was an unknown graffiti artist living on the streets of New York, rising up to being the darling of New Yorks art critics in 1981. I have been looking at a lot of Basquiat's work recently, everything thing he did from being the graffiti artist samo to the critically acclaimed artist Jean Michel Basquiat...
was amazing. I watched the film last night directed by Julian Schnabel, which is a very quick zip through of the artists life, it has an absolutly insane cast, some big names in there! It was a pretty interesting watch, however it was a rather dark existence that Basquiat had, never the less a true genius. Basquiat himself actually starred in a film named downtown 81, which i have seen parts of however the book that goes with it, New York Beat is amazing, very expensive though and hard to find but they have a copy in the library at charing cross, worth a look. The picture is of his infamous crown that Basquiat uses to symbolize himself as well as others that he talks about within his work.
