CORE 80 CD

PhotobucketI have been very busy of late, so haven't had too much time to post new work up on the blog. I have received the new issue of 'the modern gentleman' as well as sending various other pieces off to print, so its all starting to come together for the final hand in next Friday...

NUMBERS

PhotobucketOn this very sunny day I have been cutting out the numbers ready to be embossed onto the booklet for the CORE 80 work. Tomorrow I am going to go and buy all the paper stocks that I am using. It is going to consist of 3 or 4 different paper types, this is, white card, black card, thin white paper, and possible thick white card...

CORE 80

So I have just got the point of designing the booklet that is going to go with the '80' cd that I composed a month or so ago for the 'A Space For Sound' brief with Sadhna. I have decided on having four main numbers within the booklet at certain intervals, the numbers are 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80. This is due to their breaks within the composure and how it is 4 equal distances apart from each other, meaning if put within a square you would get the 'Core' in the middle of the numbers. It is also relevant to the rhythms that are going on within the composure.

CORE 80 - ASFS

PhotobucketThis week I am concentrating on getting the ASFS work done. The main concept behind the project was all about the noises that happen around you in certain spaces, and being at the epicentre of this, after talking to Sadhna about it all, I am now evolving this into something more advanced...

THE CORE - EMBOSSED POSTER

I am really starting to warm to the idea of an embossed poster, I have been playing about with embossing at the moment, and how you can emboss layers and the effects it gives. I like the idea that the posters for the installation are all done with embossing, as the piece is sound based, I want to portray the image of sound imprinting itself onto paper, through physical ways, and not just printing with ink. I also like the link between the subtlety of the sound piece that I did and how sometimes you could hear it around the building and sometimes you couldn't, mirroring this with the embossing, which sometimes can be seen clearly and sometimes not depending on the light. Anyway hopefully this will be done soon, but at the moment i' focusing on getting my head round a new self initiated, while also carrying on with the modern gentleman work.

THE CORE - EMBOSSING

PhotobucketI have been looking at the process of embossing for 'the core' work that im doing at the moment, and how I can use it within the work. I have been developing ways of using it, and why I am using it within the work. There is a simple reason to why I want to use it within the work...

THE CORE - PLAN

My plan for the ongoing 'A Space For Sound' work is evolving at the moment. I have made the sound piece and have done the installation, but I currently have nothing to show for it, excluding the sound. So I have been thinking of ways of showing the piece visually through a piece of print, I almost want it to be a visual piece of the installation, without having to be there and physically hear it or take part in it, like an exhibition book. I also want to make a set of posters to go with this book too, that show where the installation was and what it was, quickly and interestingly. I would like the book to be as visual as possible, with very definite nods towards, the time that the piece was constructed in, where the piece took place and the atmosphere it provoked, to build up and idea in the readers head. I will be working on this along with a few other projects in the next coming weeks, so look out for that.

ASFS - CORE

PhotobucketToday I have gone back to the ASFS work and am working on ways to show it, one way I have thought of is to make almost an installation poster, and leaflet, which explains what it is and give you a link to the sound that was played. I have been experimenting with different ways of visualising an identity for the work...

SOUNDART

Found this website today which features a bank of sound art and interesting things to do with sound, its all in German but its still pretty interesting.

THE CORE - LISTEN

This is a link to listen to the sounds that I played into the courtyard, best listened through speakers or headphones.

ASFS FINAL CRIT 18/02/11

PhotobucketYesterday was the final crit for the work that was produced for the 'A Space For Sound' brief. The day started pretty mad, I had to gather up the equipment I needed for the piece (thanks to Ariane for her speakers). This consisted of Ariane's speakers, and my speakers, I also needed all the necessary cables, a laptop...

TEST RUN N & M

I have just been playing my chosen sound to my man Nicholas and his brother Matthew, Both of them coming back from the freshest galleries in the east end I thought that they would be a good audience to choose. So we turned off all the lights and listened to the sounds, it is basically lots of sounds merged together to make a larger heartbeat sound. After it had finished we switched the lights back on and they both seemed to like it, and both would like to come to the crit tomorrow, however I think this may be a one off piece. Anyway, was good to play it to some people to gauge their reactions, watch your back lethaby, the sounds are coming...

TESTING SOUND

PhotobucketI was at college today testing the levels of sound that you can hear when played through speakers which are directed into the courtyard. I had Henry with me to help with gauging what the sounds was like at different point in the building...

ACOUSTIC ENVIRONMENT OF COURTYARDS

I have always thought throughout this brief that courtyards due to the way they are made, hold sound and project sound very well, this is because of their shape and size. If a sound comes from the bottom of the courtyard it is going to be able to be heard from the top, possibly louder than it is at the bottom, due to the sound reverberating throughout the space, kind of acting like the cone of a speaker. Apparently it depends on the depth of the courtyard and the position of the sound (or in the case of this work speakers). Thus meaning that the courtyard of the Lethaby is the natural place to do it, as it is the core of the building and it projects sound around the space and other parts of the college.

THE CORE OF LETHERBY

PhotobucketThe Idea I am going with for the 'A Space For Sound' brief is the 'The Core Of Lethaby'. The concept behind this is inspired by the building that many people are surrounded by currently and have been surrounded by in past years, this is the Lethaby Building on Southampton Row...

ASFS CRIT 11/02/11

Last week we had a crit with the group and Sadhna. It was an interesting crit, with some very conceptual ideas and sounds exuding out of the projection room. I talked about two of the ideas I had come up with, one being the standing waves idea and the other the heartbeat of the Leatherby building. Both ideas went down well, however we decided that the standing waves idea had been done before, and was just a idea that would have been really interesting to do, but not relevant at all to the brief that had been set. So with this we talked about the heartbeat idea.

First of all I played the sound that I had found which was the sound of a heartbeat, which I guess is a natural starting point, however we discussed about using other sounds that represent the heartbeat of the school in other better and more interesting ways, this is something that I am looking into at the moment, maybe taking sounds from within the school or something could work.

In terms of being able to install this piece I am not really sure how to go about it and who to ask, so this again is something I need to work on, however I am keep to create some form of video or something to go with the sounds, as I think it would be an interesting way of documenting the sounds and reactions or people as they heard it.

Anyhow a few things to think about, and a few days to get on and do it.

DENTSU SOUND SCULPTURE

Was just looking through some videos and stumbled upon this by Dentsu London. It is about visulisation of sound through paint being placed on top of a speaker, its amazing how they do it. Such an interesting way of looking at sound.

PLAN 4 ASFS

PhotobucketThis sound installation is inspired by the piece at saw at the Pompidou Centre in Paris back in 2005, it was all to do with the sound waves hitting each other at a certain point. Waves travel up and down, so when the exact same sound is played through the same speaker at the same volume and at the same time...

PLAN 3 ASFS

PhotobucketThis is another concept that I was talking about with influences Bruce Nauman and UVA, with a field of sound coming out of each set of speakers and when the listener walks past each one a new sound is heard, then when you set out of the line of the speakers then all you can hear is noise from all three...

PLAN 2 ASFS

PhotobucketThe second rough drawing I have done is of the main stairway in the Leatherby building, this plan is quite similar to the other in that it will be using the heartbeat sound and using this space as sort of the core to the space around it. This ultimately means that the sound will reverberate around the stairs and up to the dome...
